Many students seem to think that cramming their studies into a couple of nights before a big examination is the way to go. Cramming may help you pass a test or examination but there is a better way to achieve scholastic success. One of the keys to having success in school is to develop good study habits. What follows is a list of seven study habits that successful students use.

Routine

An important part of good study habits is to study in the same place at the same time every day. A good place to study is a place where you’ll be able to accomplish the most amount of work with the least amount of interruptions. Regarding the time-frame to study try to keep the same schedule each day, only changing it if you have to. And after each hour you study take a small break to help keep the mind relaxed and fresh.

Due Dates

Many college professors and instructors distribute a syllabus at the beginning of the semester. A syllabus usually outlines the course plan, expected readings, dates of exams, and deadlines for homework and term papers. The syllabus is a great tool to help you effectively schedule your study time so that you can turn in your work in a timely manner.

Read Ahead

As we have already mentioned professors include the semester’s reading in the syllabus, and there is a good reason for this. If the student knows what to read then are more able to prepare themselves for class discussions or an unexpected pop quiz. That’s right! Many professors like to give a pop quiz from assigned readings. If you don’t read a particular section or chapter you may not pass the quiz and this can affect your grade.

Whenever reading academic literature be sure to take notes and highlight important points. This is especially helpful when you are ready to review material for an important test or final examination. Also, when you takes notes it will much easier to recall information during class discussions.

Take Notes

We have already mentioned the benefit of taking notes while you are reading, but you should also take notes during lectures and class discussions. Taking notes while the professor is lecturing helps reinforce material you have read, and visa-a-versa. Also, most professors use a large part of their lecture material in their quizzes, tests, and final examinations.

Quick Review
After each class take a minute or two to review what was covered in that class. Also, have these little review sessions throughout your day as time permits. This helps reinforce your lessons and keeps the information fresh.

Rest and Sleep

It is a proven fact that the most successful students are the ones who have good study habits and are well rested. In fact, fatigue is a contributor to poor grades in that the student may fall asleep during class, thus missing out on valuable information, or be so tired during an exam that the brain can’t properly process information to correctly answer test questions. Successful students have an established sleep schedule and leave the partying for the weekend.

We have covered some very valuable information to help you develop good study habits. If you use these habits your grades will improve, become more consistent, and lead you to a successful educational experience.

When it comes to leadership skills some people are born with them and some people are not. To some extent a certain degree of natural leadership is a huge advantage and to an even bigger extent a hunger for the art of becoming a good leader. This will give you the drive to always strive to improve your leadership skills to the best of your ability.
A lot of people only go into leadership positions to further their own status and development in their careers. If this is the case then you should think again. With more responsibility comes more stress and there are easier ways of making more money than simply leading a team in a work environment.
When you are looking at developing leadership skills you should enjoy the challenge of working with a large group of people. You will have to generate productive outcomes while trying to accommodate different personalities of people. If you are looking at leading a team with more than two people then this become unavoidable.
When you have become a leader of a business team you should always portray yourself as confident and be easily approachable. If you turn up for work stressed out then this will be picked up on by your co workers and this could be interpreted as a negative. There have been documented examples of people who lead teams displaying stress and tension and this has been interpreted that the business is in trouble and could close. This has a negative impact on work and the work environment.
A leader should not stop talking to their team and should appear as someone who is motivational and balanced when you are in a meeting. You have to be a constant source of motivation and dependability otherwise people will not buy into you as a genuine person.
You will always need to have a strategy as this is the key factor to becoming a great leader. If you have no idea how you want the projects or even the business run then there is no way that any of your co workers will know either. Your strategy should be clear and easy to understand and once you think that everyone has understood it check again.
A positive working environment is a must for motivating people. A certain degree of stress should be encouraged but in the way of meeting deadlines or trying to get a job finished. This environment can allow people to become more focused and deliver top rate work in a healthy work place. There of course is another stress that should be avoided and that is through exhaustion and being in a super serious environment which makes work a dull place to be.
Let your team come of age as this is a huge factor to learn in terms of leadership skills and qualities. If you take all the glory with that comes all the criticism as well. You will obviously be expected to bear a lot of pressure when things ultimately go wrong but a good leader will pick up on the bad points and try to improve them while looking at keeping the good points positive.

Life can be very complicated and self discipline is often needed. Sometimes we know we must do something we don't want to do. Other times we know we must not do what we very much want to do. To cope with these situations, everyone needs to develop self discipline.

When children are small, their parents control a lot of their behavior. For example, a mother might decide that her toddler will have an apple rather than a lollipop for a snack. A teenager is likely to have money and make his/her own decisions about what to buy for a snack. He or she may want to buy candy for a snack every day. Indulging the love of candy will have consequences. Is the candy worth gaining weight and getting cavities? One way to develop self discipline is to carefully consider the consequences.

If you think about consequences, you will find it easier to make the right decision about what to do. Let's say that you may not feel like writing the essay for English class that is due tomorrow. What will the consequences be if you don't write the essay? Your teacher is likely to give you a failing grade. That may drag down your grade for the semester. That could make it more difficult for you to graduate and continue your schooling. If you don't want these consequences, you'll exercise self discipline and write the essay.

Self discipline is not easy to master. You may want to find some ways to practice controlling your own behavior. Setting up a physical exercise program for yourself is a great way to practice self discipline. Doing a set of exercises every day is very good for your body and mind. When you do your exercises every day, you will not only get the physical and mental benefits, you'll also be developing self discipline that will be invaluable in your life.

If you play an instrument, you know that sometimes you may not be in the mood to practice. If you push yourself practice, you are developing self discipline as well as improving your playing. If you think you may want to be a writer, it's a good idea to write something every day as a way to develop self discipline. Many famous authors say that they set up specific times for writing to be sure that they are productive.

If you want to be self-employed one day like a writer or musician, you'll have to be very self-disciplined. You won't have a boss leaning over you telling you to get back to work. If you don't work, you won't be able to support yourself. People who work as employees still have to exercise self discipline at work. They have to make the deadlines established by their bosses or they will get fired.

Even in your personal life, you'll need self-discipline. If you let your emotions get out of control, there are definite consequences. Losing your temper can result in the loss of friends, for example.

When you develop self-discipline, you have more control over your life. It's a good idea to practice self-discipline while you are young. Being self disciplined about life will help you achieve your objectives.

Goals are essential to achieve success because they keep us focused and motivated. Without goals we would aimlessly go down the path of life without any direction, ambition, or hope. Goals are not only something we aim to achieve, but are also markers that let us know we are doing the right things to get ourselves to places we want to be. Let’s look at some goal setting strategies to help us achieve success.

Know What You Want To Accomplish

The most important thing about goal setting for success is to know what you want to accomplish. Some people might think this is obvious and perhaps it is, but you’d be surprised by the number of people who have no clue as to what they want to do with their life. If you don’t know what it is you want to accomplish then there is no way you can begin to even think about setting goals. Thus knowing what you want to do is the most important element to goal setting.

Start Small

Every major goal consists of a series of smaller goals. For example, if your goal is to get a college degree there are things you will have to do to get it such as selecting a college, taking entrance examinations, enrolling, etc. These are all the smaller or short-term goals that will lead you to the main goal of receiving a college degree. And often smaller goals such as these consist of even smaller goals.

Once you know your primary goal you will want to make a list of the short-term goals you will need to accomplish to get to your main goal. A list like this is the first step to developing your plan and becomes like a road map directing you along your way. Without a plan or map it is easy for us to get lost or take the wrong turn on our journey.

Deadlines

All good plans operate on a timeline that has within specific deadlines to accomplish certain things. Big businesses always use timeline and deadlines, that’s one reason they are able to grow. Your goal too can be seen as a business venture. On your list of short-term goals you should specify, in realistic terms, the deadlines you wish to have each one completed within. But be realistic and flexible in defining these deadline dates, as things do happen in life that could delay the accomplishment of certain steps. Back to the college degree as an example, perhaps you are six units short of receiving your degree, but the classes you need to take won’t be available until the following semester. This is something out of your immediate control but does affect you completing your education by the deadline you had noted in your plan.

We have covered some simple steps to take in goal setting for success. As was mentioned, the key factor in any goal setting is to know what you want, make a plan, and then take the necessary steps to accomplish your goal.

Success is not something we are born with; it is something we make for ourselves. Success is also not about having knowledge as there are many knowledgeable people in the world who are not successful. Instead success is something of a mixture of our efforts, our knowledge, and our communications. And communications comes in two forms, verbal and non-verbal or body language. Successful people not only know how to verbally communicate effectively, but they also know the power of non-verbal language. Let’s look at some examples.

Eye Contact

Every successful person maintains eye contact with the person or audience they are talking to. When we maintain eye contact we are showing that we are interested in the other person and what they are saying. A fact about eye contact is that when are looking directly at the face of someone speaking we are usually in listening mode.

When a successful person is speaking their eye contact demonstrates their sincerity and trustworthiness. However, when you are speaking to a group of people your eye contact should bounce from one person to another of those who are listening. This shows not only your sincerity, but also that you are confident in what you are saying.

Listening

Some people may think that listening isn’t a type of non-verbal communication, but it most certainly is. To be begin with if you are listening that means you are not talking and this alone makes listening a non-verbal type of communication. But listening has body language components in it as well. As we noted previously when a successful person listens they maintain eye contact with the person who is speaking and this is body language that send the message to the speaker that you are interested in what the speaker has to say.

Also, when we listen we often project other body language that demonstrates our interest or disinterest. For example, our head, facial, and body movements speaks volumes about how interested we are in hearing what another person has to say. If you are moving your head from side to side, looking around, and you are fidgety chances are very good that you are not interested in listening to the other person.

Posture

Body posture is a body language that also says a lot about you. Successful people demonstrate a calm and confident body posture. When standing successful people stand erect and don’t slouch over, keeping their head and shoulders level. The feet are placed comfortably apart, generally eight to ten inches, and any body movement is done from the pelvis.

The hands and arms of the successful person are in a relaxed position, either loosely linked together at the front or comfortably resting at their sides, but never buried in pockets or crossed over in front of the chest. When speaking the successful person may move their hands about, but the movements are light and smooth with the palms up. Palms down indicate dominance and aggression.

We have covered some body language points that successful people use when they are communicating with others, however they are many more. These are presented to you to give a place to start in developing your own.

The human resources department has contacted you and you’ve secured an interview. A successful interview is essential because that’s what will determine if the company will present you with an employment offer. And to be successful in the interview you must be prepared for it. Here are a few pointers to help you prepare for your interview.

Research

One of the most advantageous things you can do in preparation for your interview is to do your homework. What this means is to find out all you can about the company you will interviewing with. Find out more about the services and/or products that the company produces. Also, if you can gather information about the company leaders, what their positions are as well as their business background. Become familiar with as much as you can about the company. The goal in doing this is to become an interactive participant of the interview.

There is one question every interviewer asks during the interview. That question is “Why do you want to work for this company?” The question may not be asked exactly like this, but something like will be asked. If you have researched the company it will make it much easier to answer questions like this without having to figure it out at last minute and you’ll also feel more confident.

Practice

Once you have done your research take some time to practice answering possible interview questions. Make a list of interview questions and then stand in front of a mirror and practice answering those questions. If you are not sure what questions might be asked go on-line or go to the local library. There is tons of literature available about being successful in the interview process, most of which have lists of possible interview questions.

If possible schedule a mock interview with someone. Family or friends may be able to help you out here. They can ask you interview questions and then critique you and let you know of any areas you might need to improve on. There are even employment services that might be willing to give you a mock interview.

Clothing and Grooming

The day before your interview select the clothing you are going to wear to the interview. If you are a male you’ll want to wear slacks and a tucked in dress shirt with a tie. If you are a female slacks and a nice blouse are acceptable. Your hair should be neat looking. Long hair should be pinned or tied back. lf you have a beard it should be presentable as well. Don’t wear blue jeans or attire that you would wear when just hanging out with friends. Your appearance will say a lot about you and how interested you are in getting the job.

Confidence

Every person who is being interviewed for a job is a bit nervous about it. It’s very normal to be a bit anxious. But you want to minimize those feelings because they can become visible to the interviewer and could make a difference in having a successful interview. Being as prepared as you possibly can be is the best way to build interviewing confidence and minimize nervousness.

Closing the Interview

As the interviewer brings the interview to a close let them know that you appreciate the opportunity to have received the interview and restate your interest in the position you were interviewed for. A follow-up thank you note is also helpful.

Webster’s dictionary defines self-confidence as “confidence in oneself and in one's powers and abilities.” Extending this definition a little further, self-confidence involves our past achievements and successes, as well as our learning experiences. Because each of us have been successful in accomplishing something in our lives at one time or another we all have some degree of self-confidence. Self-confidence is an internal voice, if you will, that says, “I can do this or that.”

For many our self-confidence is not consistent, but rather fluctuates depending on the challenges we encounter in our day to day lives. The reason our self-confidence fluctuates is because we tend to compare our belief in our abilities, which is based on our past successes, with the new challenges we face each day. However, a more balanced and sustainable self-confidence can be achieved. Here are some ways we can do that.
Achieve More
We are not born with self-confidence. Self-confidence requires work. It requires us to set goals and to accomplish those goals with a degree of success. The more we accomplish the more self-confidence we acquire. Moreover, the more challenges we face and the more successes we have in overcoming those challenges the more self-confidence we gain. Even the difficulty of those challenges can enhance our self-confidence, especially when they test our personal limits and we are successful with them.
A key component to achieving more is to make sure that your goals are realistic and reachable. If a goal is beyond your reach you could possibly set yourself up for failure and a failure will do nothing to build lasting self-confidence. If the goal is unreachable at the moment but is something you really want then break that goal down into smaller goals then work toward accomplishing those.
Reflection
Sometimes we may encounter challenges that question our self-confidence. In these situations it enhances our self-confidence in the face of the current challenge if we are able to reflect on our past accomplishments. Many sports competitors do this very thing before every competition. Whenever we reflect on our past successes we “psyche” ourselves up to be successful with the current challenge.
Confident Self Talk
Confident self talk is a technique in which you basically affirm your ability to do something. This affirmation can be as simple as saying “I can do this”. Do not allow negative self talk to enter your thought process and when they do replace them with positive and affirming thoughts. When we think confidently and positively about challenges it becomes much easier to overcome them.
Visualization
Another technique you can use to build your self-confidence is visualization. Visualization is picturing yourself reaching your goal. With this technique see yourself executing every step necessary to accomplish your goal.

Finally, self-confidence does not only come from accomplishing our goals, but also from the knowledge of the time and effort we invested to reach those goals. Although we feel good about accomplishing a goal, the real source of self-confidence comes from what we did to get there.

The term to assert yourself basically means to express yourself confidently on what you feel and also what you need and what you expect from other people who are working for you without sounding threatening. This is sometimes easier said than done as a work place can be quite a daunting place and you need to have the confidence in yourself.
In a working environment the atmosphere is usually stressful as well as demanding and it is because of this that asserting your self can be quite difficult. There is however some tips that you can follow that will provide you with a good knowledge on how to have the confidence to assert yourself in a working environment.
Before you can begin to assert yourself you need to know what you need from others around you and more importantly knowing yourself. To be able to do this is helps you understand what is expected of you and what you expect of others.
To know what is required from a certain project to get it completed will then enable you to understand what you need from your co workers to get these tasks done. Once you know what you need others to do then it allows you to be able to assign the tasks to your co workers objectively by asserting yourself.
While you are trying to assert yourself in the working environment then you should explain what is needed as clearly as possible. If you are not clear about what you need and require then the person or persons who have been assigned a certain task may get confused and deliver something that can not be used all because you did not assert yourself in the proper manner.
If you feel that you have asserted yourself properly but have a feeling that there is some confusion try to get your colleagues to actively ask you questions so that you know they understand the task at hand. This will give them confidence as well as yourself and they will be easier to talk to in the working environment as will you, especially if they need to ask you questions later on.
By coming across as confident and by knowing what you need to be done, this will make yourself seem more approachable than other people in the working environment and this will lead to you being able to get people to work for you to the best of their ability.
Always have the courage to say what is on your mind or if you think that something should be done another way, especially when dealing with management and supervisors. If you do speak your mind then you should do so in a polite manner but at the same time expressing how you feel by putting your points forward.
If you do appear aggressive this is how other people will view you and this is not what is classed as being assertive. Aggression is classed as threatening behaviour in the work place whereas assertiveness is not threatening behaviour. Be sure to follow these tips and you will become a confident and assertive member of any workforce anywhere.

Do you ever get tired of being misunderstood? Does it seem to you that sometimes people just don’t listen to you? It can be so frustrating! Of course, you want to be someone whose opinions are valued and who people actually listen to.

If you learn how to express your thoughts very clearly and have people listen to you, you will get such a thrill out of it! Everything you do in your work and personal life will be easier and more fun. But how do you put your ideas across and have people listen to you?

Here are a few tips which will enable you to express your ideas and opinions clearly:

Have an aim in mind

It is a lot easier to speak eloquently when you know what you’re talking about and what you want to achieve. If you plan in your head what you want to achieve from a conversation, you can be much more confident when you speak and that will allow you to do so more clearly.

The added bonus you get when you communicate with people confidently is that they are more inclined to listen intently to you.

Don’t stress about being perfect

Nothing and no-one is perfect, and no-one expects you to be perfect when you speak. It’s not an insurmountable problem if you make a small error in what you say. You can always correct yourself later. If you stress too much about making a mistake you will panic and fall apart. Don’t let that happen to you!

Keep it simple

What makes you stop listening when someone is talking to you? Perhaps one of the most likely times to switch off and not listen is when we are lectured. Being lectured is boring and it doesn’t give the listener any respect to their opinions.

Also, don’t feel you need to use fancy language. Simple words and sentences are best. These simple facts should be expressed in an animated, enthusiastic way to hold the attention of the person or people to whom you are talking. Don’t complicate things with details you don’t need. Hat way you will get the conversation over with more quickly and people will know what you want to achieve.

Overcome your nerves

If you are nervous about speaking to a crowd of people, try pretending you are alone. If what you have to say is important, you should have practiced it beforehand, so just imagine yourself back in your practice situation. Imagine yourself alone and saying what you need to say in a relaxed environment. You will feel much more comfortable and you will speak much better as a result.

Practice and revise

If whatever you are saying is important to get right, make sure you practice a few times before you need to deliver your speech or have the conversation. As you practice, listen to yourself. Are you really saying what you want to say? If not, and something seems unclear – change it!

When your audience feels you are confident about what you’re saying, they will be more impressed with what you say. They will feel that your heart is in it.

So, learning how to express your ideas and opinions is quite a simple thing. Every human being has things which worry us and make us nervous. The same will be true of the people you are talking to.

If you make use of these few tips you will soon be able to express your ideas and opinions clearly and confidently.

In our everyday lives there are two different kinds of respect we give to those we interact with. One is earned respect and involves emotions like love and admiration. Earned respect takes time to cultivate and is based on things like confidence, trustworthiness, values, and the beliefs of the person we have this kind of respect for. Earned respect is based more on the knowing of someone.

Normative respect is the other kind of respect we give someone and is the most common type of respect we give people we may not know. For example, a man may open a door for a woman he doesn’t know. Normative respect is also a respect given because of a person status, not necessarily for the kind of person they are. For example, most people have respect for a policeman, the law, or for their boss. Normative respect is based more on duty.

In the work place the ideal type of respect to gain from your peers and employees is of course earned respect. However, if you are a manager or supervisor you will gain normative respect from most of your employees because of your status. But, as was indicated earlier, earned respect takes time to acquire because it involves the demonstration of behaviours and attitudes. Let’s look at some ways to gain earned respect.

Talk Less and Listen More

Rather than talking about how good you are show how good you are in your actions. If we are behaving in the right way we don’t need to verbally justify our actions. Additionally, we don’t need to speak up about every little thing that takes place around us. Be selective about what things are worthy of your input.

Everybody likes to be heard and when we patiently listen to those talking to us we are showing our interest, concern, and appreciation for them. Moreover, listening is complimentary to talking. When we thoroughly listen to someone we become more able to properly influence them when do talk.

Show Sincere Appreciation

Sincere appreciation and flattery are two different things. You might use flattery on someone at the local pub to get their attention to let them know you are interested in them. Sincere appreciation on the other hand is not about receiving a reciprocal response. It’s about recognizing good behaviours and actions in another and complimenting them for it in a genuine manner. When you see people you work with that deserve appreciation give it generously and without flattery.

Honesty

If you are dishonest or untruthful you will never gain genuine respect form your co-workers or employees. If you are dishonest they may give you normative respect because of your position but you will never earn real respect. If something goes wrong and you are responsible step up and take that responsibility without shifting the blame elsewhere. You will be much better for it in the long-run.

Have Self-Respect

Having self-respect is perhaps the most important component of earning respect from others. Without self-respect there is no way you can respect others and behave in ways to earn their respect.

We have seen the difference between the two kinds of respect, normative and earned. We have also gained an understanding of some ways to gain genuine respect in the workplace and if we apply these to our daily lives we can easily find ourselves much happier.
