No matter how you look at life peers influence you and the world around you. You basically learn from them all the time and in turn they learn from you. It is in our nature to pick up habits from all those around us and they all have an influence on our lives. Peers have a positive influence of each other as well and the way to think of this is that maybe someone has told you how to do something better than the way you did so before and this is a positive influence on our lives.
Maybe you have started off a craze or trend, whether that is through the clothes you are wearing or whether you are reading the latest book and all of sudden everyone is reading it. These are all ways of positive influences from your peers.
Of course, where there are positive influences you will be faced with negative ones. Whether this is something simple like skipping a class or something more serious like taking drugs or maybe doing something that is against the law.
The main reason that people give in to peer pressure is because they want to fit in and be liked by other people around them. Whether you are new to an area and are looking to make friends quickly or whether you are trying to get into a gang of people they are all ways in which we are exposed to peer pressure. Other forms of pressure that you come across are a sense of curiosity to try something different and with children especially, curiosity usually will take control before common sense.
It is very difficult to say no to peer pressure but it is possible. Every person has a sense of what right and wrong is and this is what we should listen to when we are involved in peer pressure. You should know the right thing to do is usually the best and it does help you develop an inner strength to help you stand your ground.
Somewhere along the line someone would have told you to choose your friends carefully, and it is because of peer pressure that this saying has come into use. If you have friends who do not smoke or take drugs then the chances of you being forced by them to try them is almost zero, and this will have the opposite affect to someone who is exposed to smoking and drugs.
The best ways to avoid peer pressure are to avoid the people who provide it. If you are constantly pressured then all you have to do is say no and walk away with your head held high. Find other people who will not pressure you into anything that you do not want to do.
Although peer pressure is usually a negative impact on peoples lives there is a positive impact from certain types of peer pressure. An example would be trying to get a bully in a school to change their ways. This is what is classed as positive peer pressure.
