George Washington University
In the school's own words...
The George Washington University School of Business (GWSB) is proud to be an active part of the emerging movement of businesses and business schools that are paying increasing attention to environmental and social issues in business. GWSB was an early participant in the Business Environment Learning Leadership (BELL) program that became part of the World Resources Institute (WRI), and, since the early 1990s, has synergized its long-standing orientation to social issues management with research, teaching, and service in the area of environmental stewardship. Washington, D.C., with its numerous public, nonprofit, and small-to-medium size business organizations, including major consulting organizations, and its international community, provides the ideal setting for students to increase their awareness of and interactions with organizations and individuals who have broad and deep experience and knowledge bases in these important areas. As a leading university in the Washington, D.C. consortium of 15 universities and colleges, George Washington University is a repository and portal of multiple sustainability educational opportunities throughout the region.
While both our faculty and administrators have provided leadership in guiding students toward sustainability, our students have also often taken it upon themselves to form groups, such as the GW Net Impact and Sustainable GW organizations, to organize speaker series, panels, workshops, and conferences, such as the 2002 National Net Impact conference, to identify, excel in, and leverage internships with the World Bank, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, WRI, and many other organizations, all with the goal of “greening” their careers and their eventual employers. Students have also worked with faculty associated with the GW Environmental and Social Sustainability Initiative (http://www.gwu.edu/~essi) and with our GWSB administrators to help design specialized fields in Environmental Policy and Management, Nonprofit Organization Management, and Strategic Management and Public Policy and to conduct sustainability-related research on topics such as environmental stewardship and corporate social responsibility.
